Killing Weeds While Staying Eco-Friendly: What You Need To Know

Blog

As a proud new homeowner, you want to make sure you home and landscaping are in the best possible condition and as aesthetically appealing as possible. Of primary concern when it comes to your landscaping is weed control and eradication. However, on top of your desire to have a beautiful lawn, you are also environmentally conscious and would prefer not to use harsh chemicals on your lawn that could harm surrounding wildlife, or could affect your pet's, family's, or even your own health. Luckily, there are environmentally friendly solutions to your lawn's weed problem. All you need to do is learn your options and choose an eco-friendly method that works for you.

Vinegar

Vinegar is one of those products that you should keep on hand in your home at all times. It can serve a myriad of purposes – as an ingredient in cooking, a personal care product, a household cleaning product, or even as a lawn or garden care product.

Vinegar is full of acetic acid, which is a natural plant-killer. So, when using vinegar to control weeds in your lawn and garden, be sure to only apply the vinegar directly to the unwanted plants.

While you need to be careful when applying vinegar so that you do not damage the plants you want to keep, it is otherwise entirely innocuous. It will not harm animals or people in any way.

Cornmeal

Believe it or not, cornmeal can actually help to prevent weed growth in your yard. All you need to do is find the areas where the weeds seem to grow the most and lay cornmeal on the ground.

Ideally, you will do this early in the growing season, but as long as the ground is dry, it will be effective. Cornmeal prevents the seeds it comes into contact with from developing into full-grown plants. While it will not kill existing weeds, it will prevent future growth.

Boiling Water

Getting rid of unwanted weeds in your yard or garden can be as simple as pouring out a pot of boiling water. In fact, you can even pour out boiling pasta water or the like onto the plants.

Just be careful to avoid splashing so that you do not burn yourself. Additionally, just like with all remedies, you do not want to allow the boiling water to come into contact with wanted plant life.

These easy, natural methods for controlling and eradicating weeds can help you to maintain your landscaping without sacrificing your environmentally friendly values. So, give these natural methods a try as soon as possible.  For more information, speak with specialists like C S Flournoy Inc.
